Urban Health Plan’s Residency Program for Nurse Practitioners (NP) and Physician Assistants (PA) provides comprehensive training in all areas of primary care during the year-long program.

This post-graduate residency program will provide the new NP/PA with experience working with a diverse South Bronx, Queens, and Harlem community with multiple, chronic health conditions and those facing social and economic adversity. Experienced providers will work side-by-side with residents as they treat patients in the various health care settings and departments. Program faculty will support residents in advancing their skills of delivering comprehensive health care specific to the uninsured and underserved populations.

While the new NP/PA enters the program licensed to practice, the goal of the program is to reinforce and further develop professional competence while also training the clinician in a model of integrated care.

To provide rigorous post-graduate training to new nurse practitioner and physician assistant graduates embedded with a deep understanding of the social determinants of health and the achievement of health equity unique for the communities we serve.

  • Weekly didactic sessions:
    • Scheduled learning sessions on a variety of complex, clinical chal¬lenges most commonly encountered in a community health care setting
  • Primary care and specialty rotation experiences
  • Ongoing multi-input evaluation component using qualitative and quantitative measures
  • Participation in learning collaboratives
  • Participation in community engagement project
  • Monthly assignments focusing on Social –determinents of health
  • Leadship development curriculum

Requirements to apply:

Graduate of PA or FNP program, bilingual preferred, with a stated commitment to practice primary care safety-net settings and an interest working in health care team.

Who Can Apply?

Graduates from an accredited FNP/ANP master’s program, DNP program, or PA program.

Am I eligible for loan or scholar repayment during the residency?

No. Scholar repayment can be deferred for the residency year and residents are not eligible for loan repayment during the residency year as it is a formal training program. However, residents can defer loan repayment during the residency year. Application for loan repayment programs such as National Health Service Corps and Nurse Corps can be initiated during the residency year to be eligible for loan repayment during the post residency years. Please let the residency team know if you are eligible for one of these programs or have applied.

Do I need my professional licenses when I apply to the program?

No. New York State license, NYS Medicaid enrollment, and DEA need to be in place by the start of the program. Residents must sit for and pass their board certification exam through AANP, ANCC or NCCPA.

Is the NP/PA Residency Program Accredited?

Yes, the program is accredited as an NP/PA postgraduate residency training program by the National Nurse Practitioner Residency & Fellowship Training Consortium (NNPRFTC).
