Prevention Starts Now! 13th Annual Diabetes Expo features expert insight on how diabetics benefit from a team approach

Bronx, NY — More than 29 million Americans have diabetes, yet 1 in 4 don’t  know they have it, according to The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Another 86 million adults – more than one in three U.S. adults – have prediabetes,

Locally, diabetes rates are equally high, especially in the Bronx. According to the New York City Department of Health, of the 10 community districts with the highest rates of diabetes in the city, five are located in the Bronx, with Mott Haven having the highest rates of diabetes-related deaths in the borough.

Managing this disease takes coordination among a patient’s health care team, one of the themes of Urban Health Plan’s 13th Annual Diabetes Expo, which takes place on Friday, July 29 from 10 am to 3 pm. This free event provides valuable resources, food demonstrations, physical activities and family entertainment designed to teach diabetes management and prevention.

This year’s Expo features “Ask the Experts,” a panel of specialists — an endocrinologist, a pediatrian, and a nutritionist/diabetes educator – discussing how to manage diabetes and beat prediabetes. These experts are available for interviews.
