Richard Izquierdo, M.D., October 23, 1929 – June 28, 2020
June 29, 2020 – Urban Health Plan and the Dr. Richard Izquierdo Health and Science Charter School mourn the loss of our founder and visionary leader, Richard Izquierdo, M.D., affectionately known as “Doc.”
Doc led a social justice movement in the 70s to ensure equal access to healthcare for the Latino residents of the South Bronx, which led to the creation of Urban Health Plan. Thirty years later, he and his daughter founded the Dr. Richard Izquierdo Health & Science Charter School to prepare minority youth for health careers. Throughout his life, Doc worked tirelessly to improve health outcomes in the South Bronx. A long time member and first chairperson of Bronx Community Board 2, he led the fight to restore the South Bronx after hundreds left the area because of the upheavals that were taking place in the community.
With a wonderful sense of humor and no-nonsense attitude Doc brought his wealth of knowledge, compassion and love to everything he did. He loved music and dancing and had a deep respect for his profession. We will miss his generous spirit, his kindness, his big heart and his even bigger love for life.
