Cheraine Case is a strategic administrative leader who handles many of the organization’s efficiency decisions. She joined Urban Health Plan in 1998 as an outreach worker and has ascended through several positions before arriving at her current leadership role.
In partnership with the CEO and other leadership team members, Cheraine develops strategies and policies to help the organization maintain regulatory compliance with agencies such as HRSA, Joint Commission, OIG, and DOH. Without this compliance, Urban Health Plan wouldn’t receive the grants needed to offer health care to all.
Quality Improvement is at the core of Urban Health Plan’s culture, and Cheraine lives it daily, overseeing, directing, and monitoring programs, systems, and processes that lead to improvement. Since she started, she’s been involved in upgrading several administrative programs such as the payroll, HRIS, and performance management systems. She is constantly trying to do more, accept challenges, get to the next level, and figure out how to get things done. “Quality improvement and process improvement – everything I do is in that vein. It’s always top of mind.”
And she encourages her team to do so, too. A true team leader – and team player – Cheraine recognizes and appreciates the efforts of everyone on her team for their hard work and dedication. She strives to help associates discover their full potential and achieve their goals while setting a good example as a strategic leader. “I push people beyond their comfort zones… get them to think creatively. There’s not much you can’t do or try.”
One of the accomplishments she’s particularly proud of is her role in the construction/renovation and opening of several of UHP’s health centers and administrative sites. Today under her leadership, UHP has 12 health care centers, 12 school-based centers, two mental health centers and one part-time clinic.
The daughter of Jamaican immigrants, Cheraine has lived in the Bronx on and off her whole life and has passion for the people in the community. But her “never-give-up attitude” is driven by her spirituality – she believes God has put her in her role to help make a difference in the life of every patient who comes through the doors of Urban Health Plan – and to leave the world a better place for her beloved son. “It’s my purpose,” she says. “I am living my passion.”
Cheraine earned her bachelor’s degree at Southern New Hampshire University. She is currently a Member of the Project Management Institute and CHCANYS Emergency Management Committee.
